The Name and the Collective
Perplexity Alloy is a collective of nine artists, curators and cultural practitioners.
The name Perplexity Alloy did not begin as a concept. It began as a confession.
It first appeared in an unfinished book of poems by the artist and curator Amirali Ghasemi, who is also one of the members of the collective. Written during a long period of creative silence, the book carried the title Perplexity Alloy (آلیاژ بُهت). Unable to express himself through his own lyrical and visual work at the time, Ghasemi began speaking through the work of others — the artists he collaborated with, the practices he curated, and the voices he helped bring into the world. The phrase became a way of naming a strange and generative condition: finding form through collective rather than individual expression.
When the collective later began to take shape, the name was already there — quietly describing what was happening.
The group adopted it not as a tribute, but as a description of a shared way of working.
It is a method of working with complexity. Rather than sharing a style or aesthetic, they are united by a shared attitude of refusing to oversimplify.
PERPLEXITY is the moment before a quick answer takes over. It is the pause when questions are more valuable than answers. In a world that rewards speed, clarity and easy consumption, embracing complexity is almost a radical act. That is exactly the point. For PERPLEXITY ALLOY ambiguity is not a weakness; it is a way of staying true to oneself.
ALLOY speaks to how the collective works together. An alloy is stronger than its individual components, not because they blend into one another, but because of the tension between them. The nine members of PERPLEXITY ALLOY come from different backgrounds, disciplines, and perspectives. Those differences are not ironed out. It is these differences that bring their joint work to life.
What holds the collective together is not consensus. Rather, it is the belief that honest friction between people, ideas and forms produces something that none of them could achieve alone.
PERPLEXITY ALLOY is not a movement. It is a practice of clear complexity.
